Academic Background:

Mel earned his M.D. in 2009 from St. George's University School of Medicine. 

He has a Master of Science degree in Nutritional Biochemistry and Metabolism with a Specialization in Physiology from the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.

He also has a Master of Arts in Medical Science from Boston University School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health.

He graduated from College of the Holy Cross with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and pre-medical studies.

Fitness Consulting:

After successfully transforming his own physique, Mel was inspired to write two fitness books and he has helped hundreds of others achieve their health and fitness goals.

   Mel's third book helps students, residents, and other health professionals thrive on the hospital wards!

Dr. Mel Ona

 

Martial Arts Training:

Mel has trained in the martial arts for 7 years and earned a black belt in Jeet Kune Do, a black belt in Filipino Martial Arts/Doce Pares) and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

He has trained under Grandmaster Richard Bustillo (one of Bruce Lee's original students), Grandmaster Cacoy Canete (Doce Pares system) and has learned from top coaches in mixed martial arts (MMA) including UFC fighter, Kenny "Ken Flo" Florian, and Steve Whittier ("The MMA Performance Professor" and Founder of Nexus Martial Arts).

Current Activities:

Mel is a Chief Resident in his 3rd year of an Internal Medicine Residency Program in Brooklyn, New York. 

He is also a fitness/nutrition consultant; helping people change their bodies and transform their lives through nutrition and exercise.

He enjoys spending time with his wife and two dogs, training at the gym, and continues to take singing lessons with Karen Nimereala in Manhattan.
